📖 How to Play FreeCell

FreeCell is the thinking person's solitaire — nearly every deal is winnable with the right strategy. Unlike Klondike, all 52 cards are dealt face-up from the start, so there's no hidden information. Every win and every loss comes down to your decisions.

🎯 Goal

Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles in the top-right corner. Each foundation builds one suit in ascending order from Ace through King: A → 2 → 3 → … → K.

🃏 The Layout

The board has three areas. The tableau is made up of 8 columns where all cards are dealt face-up. The four free cells in the top-left are temporary parking spots that hold one card each. The four foundations in the top-right are your goal — build each suit from Ace to King.

🔀 How to Move Cards

You can place a card on a tableau column if it is one rank higher and the opposite color. For example, a black 7 goes on a red 8, or a red Queen goes on a black King. Empty columns accept any card. Free cells accept any single card, but each cell holds only one. Cards are automatically sent to foundations when safe.

📦 The Supermove

FreeCell lets you move a stack of properly ordered cards in one action. The maximum stack size depends on your available space: (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns). For example, with 3 free cells and 1 empty column, you can move up to 8 cards at once. Managing free cells and empty columns is the core strategic challenge.

🏆 Scoring

You start each game with 500 points. Each move costs 1 point, each undo costs 5 points, and each card sent to a foundation earns 15 points. The goal is to win with the highest score possible — fewer moves means a higher score.

From Beginner to Cyborg ☠ — seven difficulty levels change the number of free cells available, making the supermove calculation progressively tighter.

💡 Tips & Strategies

🧠
Think Ahead
Expose aces and twos as early as possible — they unlock the foundation piles.
Start Simple
Avoid filling all four free cells simultaneously — doing so leaves you with no flexibility.
🎯
Daily First
An empty column is far more valuable than it appears; guard it and use it deliberately.
🔄
Use Restart
When you cannot see a clear path to unburying an important card, plan a different sequence entirely.
📈
Track Your Best
The supermove rule: you can move a stack of N cards if you have (free_cells + 1) × 2^(empty_columns) ≥ N.
