📖 How to Play Nurikabe

Nurikabe is a classic Japanese logic puzzle that asks you to partition a grid into black cells (the river) and white cells (the islands). Each numbered clue in the grid represents an island of exactly that many white cells. Your task is to determine which cells belong to which island, and which cells are the river, using the following rules: islands must have exactly as many cells as their number; no two islands can touch horizontally or vertically; and all river cells must form a single connected group with no 2×2 blocks.

Nurikabe is one of the most logically rich puzzle formats in existence. The constraints interact in subtle ways — a river cell you place to isolate one island might force a 2×2 violation across the board. The no-2×2 river rule is particularly powerful and experienced solvers use it aggressively to eliminate cell states early.

The game includes an automated validator that highlights violations in real time, making it possible to learn the rules by experimentation. The hint system (available at lower difficulty levels) points to the most productive next deduction rather than giving away a solution, so it functions as a teaching tool rather than a cheat.

At beginner level, puzzles are small with generous clue numbers, leaving few ambiguous cells. At Cyborg level, sparse clues on large grids require long chains of elimination logic before a single cell can be definitively coloured. These puzzles can take 30–60 minutes for even experienced solvers.

Nurikabe is relatively unknown outside Japan and dedicated puzzle communities, which makes it a hidden gem on Cliko Games. Players who discover it through search or recommendation tend to become long-term daily players — the daily puzzle streak is one of the most active on the platform.

💡 Tips & Strategies

🧠
Think Ahead
A numbered clue of 1 means that cell alone is the entire island — immediately mark all its neighbours as river.
Start Simple
River cells cannot form 2×2 blocks — use this rule aggressively to force river-or-island decisions.
🎯
Daily First
Two numbered clues that are two cells apart must be separated by at least one river cell between them.
🔄
Use Restart
Islands with large numbers can often be partially deduced from their starting cell and the available space.
📈
Track Your Best
When an island is fully sized, mark all adjacent cells as river to lock it in.
